You'll be pleased to know that I've laid some interesting foundations for the new grounded states too.
Most pleasingly of all, the reaction to these attacks is also finely tuned - even more so than in Reach - with the victim ALWAYS reeling back far enough to stay beyond the aggressor (thus preventing clipping). The travelling of these moves is also as smooth as it was in Reach (albeit linked to "Agility" this time instead of the now defunct "Reach"). The different attacks now use an ungodly amount of data to precisely figure out when an impact starts and ends - with the range rising and falling smoothly as the animation progresses, which is then further offset against the size of the aggressor to ensure bigger characters really do enjoy a better reach (which wasn't true of Wrestling Encore). An equally sophisticated new system has arisen to take its place though. And the fist-based collision detection has gone with it, since it's not entirely compatible with wrestling novelties such as dropkicks, etc. The first thing to go was the attacking system, which has once again been condensed onto just one button.

I've spent the past few days trawling through the code and carefully weeding out the boxing elements that aren't relevant to a wrestling game - while keeping the common elements that will give us a significant headstart.
If Reach made Wrestling Encore "look" like a demo, then this new project promises to make Reach PLAY like a demo! It's already halfway there after inheriting much of boxing game's engine. That's not to say it won't be something special though.

In addition, the fights are entertaining enough to keep you playing for hours, even if you lose each one of them. All this week, work has slowly begun on the new wrestling project - albeit with less fanfare in light of the fact that it'll be played by fewer people than the original series (if Reach didn't work for you, neither will this). Regardless of the game's humorous approach, Wrestling MPire 2008: Career Edition can still be enjoyed quite a lot, especially if you adhere to the ironic and sarcastic view on the wrestling world.

An entertaining and clever wrestling simulator Naturally, fights will ensue between the players outside the right as well, since no one actually stops you from doing so.
In addition, it is also possible to take part in two-on-two matches, in which two of the players fight in the ring and the other two wait for their turn on the sidelines. Obviously, if you bring the weapons into the ring and you use them on your opponent, you are automatically disqualified from the event. Until then, the fights can get quite disorienting, especially since you are allowed to step out of the ring at any time and take part in vicious brawls, using chairs, knives and whatever else you happen to find laying around. Fights that degenerate into back-alley brawlsĪs far as the actual fighting mechanics, the game is rather simple to learn, although there are a lot of special combinations that come into play once your character gets a bit more experienced. Hence, you are ridiculed by your opponents most of the time, while the spectators usually burst into laughter when you fail to execute a certain technique. Wrestling, on the other hand, is all about being popular with the crowd, which is sometimes more important than being good at the actual sport. Thus, by winning shady events in front of a handful of people, you can throw together a bunch of money and open ways towards bigger gigs, which are more capable of bringing you fame and glory.Īlthough the game is filled with humor and sarcasm, it does represent the conditions of a newcomer quite accurately, regardless of the chosen sport. Such is the case in Wrestling MPire 2008: Career Edition, which allows you to create a character and follow his progress over the course of a hopefully successful career, unless you quickly fall into obscurity. Thus, until you get a good contract, you are liable to remain jobless for quite some time, regardless of how much training you put into honing your skills. Wrestling may have gotten a bad rap on TV, but the sport is not an easy one at all, especially in the beginning when no one knows who you are or what you can do.
